Censorship and moderation

A while ago I posted that I'd changed the settings on my blog to "moderate all comments" - I did this because I get a ridiculous amount of spam and don't wish to have loads of comments about unwanted pharmaceuticals.

Recently though I found myself pondering whether or not to publish comments from a reader who disliked one of my posts.

I made the decision to publish, I'm not ashamed of anything I write about in my blog and believe others are entitled to express their opinions.

I'm curious to know what other bloggers think? Would you have published?

Yes I would have published the comments, it takes allsorts to make the world go round. We are all entitled to our own opinion. I did see what the "anonymous" posted on yr blog, you published it and didn't shy away from it some people wouldn't have done that.

Thanks Gilly.

If the comment is just plain mean spirited then no I won't publish but if it's a different opinion than yes I would, as long as the person wasn't hiding their identity. That's a pet peeve of mine. Stand behind what you say.

I would have published, but I dont like people who keep themselves anonymous. besides, in the post in question, the farmer/owner of the sheep would most certainly have been aware that their livestock was likely to be snowed in, and it was they rather than you who were lacking in compassion.

Thanks Sassy and Joy. Of course it's possible, that even though it looked uncomfortable to us humans, it may be that it wasn't a problem at all. I don't know anything at all about keeping sheep.

As long as the comments were a reasoned disagreement with a name attached as opposed to a purely negative (crazy talk) anonymous rant, I would post them.
Disagreeing people are out there, and deserve their opinion. Insane stalker people are also out there, and I would hate to encourage them.

Oh, I wanted to add, I removed the word verification from my blog. On the one hand, I get more spam, on the other, disabled people can now post more easily. (suggested by Lene Andersen of the Seated View blog)

Yes I would have published the comment but like you I would not have considered the sheep my responsibility, the farmer would (or at least) should have been checking them. Not quite sure how he would have fixed the "problem" anyway, short of bringing them all into a warm barn?!! Different if I knew the farmer couldn't get to his stock and they were on my door step, then we would take care of them as best we could.

I'd have published it, they didn't make you look stupid, just made themselves look stupid and I do so hate comments from 'anonymous', I think if you have an opinion to share you should be credited with it. But that's another debate all together! x

I think you were right in this case to publish as it wasn't a personal attack but a valid opinion. I agree though that surely a farmer checks their sheep on a daily basis - in the snow they must need to feed them every day. It would be different if it was a sheep caught on barbed wire and in obvious distress.

Thanks for adding your voices everyone!

Yep, I would have published as well and I think you handled the situation very well.

Thank you everyone. Amusingly I attracted a spammer...they said "wow what a great writer, how can I contact you to write for me?"

*is not stupid*

You'll always get rude people, I think you were right to publish the comment, they kind of showed themselves up as mean. You can point a valid opposing point across without being mean or anonymous.
